Biography
Gilbert Breton
Born in 1939 in Warwick of the Bois Francs region, Gilbert Breton presently lives in Victoriaville where he teaches and paints regulary both outdoors and in his studio.
After finishing high school in Victoriaville, he studied from 1960 to 1965 at Montreal's l'Institut des Arts appliqués which was under the direction of Jean-Marie Gauvreau. He won this institution's prize for best thesis.
For awhile he was an organizer of painting workshops, then in 1978 he became a painting instructor for the Departement of adult Education of Bois Francs.
He has received many distinctions, one of wich was a trophy for the Festival de la peinture in 1981. He participated in a travelling exhibition, Visage de mon pays, organized by the Maison de la Francophonie and holds regular exhibitions in Quebec.
He paints in a style that is more realist than impressionist, using oil, water colour and gouache.
When Gilbert Breton paints scenes he gives us the impression that he is more interested by its urban context than strctly by its nature. Thus, in his paintings, the human element prevailthrough the presence of people, the placement of buildings roads, poles, street lamps, etc. Always in brillant colours, the stories which this painter ‘'tells'' are alive, realistic and well constructed. His respect for the three planes is integral is subtle, imparting great strengh to his photogenic-like image. Generally, hi stones are very bold and even define the forms of different elements and accessoiries.
