Biography
The pursuit of painting Canada's varied and beautiful lands, waters and skies, has been a consuming affair for much of Cory's life.
Graduating in 1990 from Sheridan College in Brampton , Ontario , Cory began immediately freelancing as a commercial illustrator, creating paintings for numerous magazines, advertising firms, government agencies and private companies. Over the years some of these included the National Capital Commission in Ottawa, Campbells, IBM , Imperial Oil, Bank of Montreal, Outdoor Canada magazine, Ontario Out of Doors magazine and Outdoor Life magazine to name a few. In the last couple of years, Cory was commissioned by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to create natural environment pieces featuring above/below water scenes from which posters were created to promote our natural resources. The first depicted a coldwater stream with various trout and life forms in their natural environment. In 2000, Cory completed the sequel, a piece featuring the newly designated Great Lakes Heritage Coast (the shorelines of Georgian Bay and Lake Superior ).
Throughout his career, Cory has always pursued his own artistic visions through painting the outdoors. From local trips to Algonquin and Killarney Parks , to more far ranging excursions to Newfoundland and British Columbia , Cory has taken his canvases, panels, brushes and oils with him into the field. Painting on location gives Cory the opportunity to be enveloped by nature's beauty, and this in turn infuses his work with a deeper emotional quality. This often has the effect of drawing the viewer closer to the nature that he paints, one of the goals of sharing his work as an artist.
In the fall of 2000, Cory exhibited his work at the McMichael Canadian Art gallery in Kleinburg by invitation as part of a group show. Here, the landscapes he presented continued the strong traditon of Canadian art reflecting our environment.
The outdoors surrounds Cory's studio in the hills of Caledon East. It is there that he lives with his wife Janet, and two young daughters, Andie and Sydney.
